We love bilingual books. There’s something wonderful about handing a child a book that holds two languages between its covers. It says, right there on the page, that your language matters here. For kids growing up in bilingual households, in heritage language programs, or just in families that believe two languages are better than one, these books are a daily reminder that the world is wider than any single tongue.
And honestly, you don’t need a research study to see why they work (though the research is there!). You can see it on a child’s face when they recognize their home language on a page that sits comfortably next to another. That moment of recognition is worth everything.
We’ve gathered some of our favorite bilingual children’s books by language pair: Spanish, Chinese, French, Swahili, and Xhosa. Whether you’re shopping for a heritage language learner, an immersion school student, or a family that simply loves language, there’s something here for every reader.
Spanish-English Books
If you’re looking for bilingual books in Spanish and English, you’re in luck, because there are some terrific ones out there. These three are favorites of ours, and they’re not just translations. They feel fully alive in both languages.

La oruga muy hambrienta/The Very Hungry Caterpillar: bilingual board book (Spanish Edition)

Maria Had A Little Llama Maria Tenia Una Llamita Pura Belpre Honor Books Illustration Honor Spanish Edition

Arroz con leche / Rice Pudding: Un poema para cocinar / A Cooking Poem (Bilingual Cooking Poems)
Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar in its Spanish-English board book edition makes a wonderful first bilingual book. It’s familiar enough to feel safe, and the translation is careful enough to feel natural. We love Maria Had a Little Llama, a Pura Belpre Honor Book set in the Andes that reimagines a beloved nursery rhyme in a Peruvian cultural context, and both the Spanish and English versions sing. And Arroz con Leche / Rice Pudding is a delightful cooking poem that makes language learning sensory: the words of the recipe, the rhythm of the poem, and the experience of preparing food together all reinforce one another. It’s the kind of book that gets kids into the kitchen!
Chinese-English Books
Bilingual Chinese-English books are a fantastic resource for families in immersion programs, Chinese-American families, and anyone whose kids are curious about China. We’re excited about these three. They’re great stories first and language-learning tools second.

Ming’s Adventure in the Forbidden City: A Story in English and Chinese

The Water Dragon A Chinese Legend English And Chinese Bilingual Text

Zheng He, The Great Chinese Explorer: A Bilingual Story of Adventure and Discovery (Chinese and English)
Ming’s Adventure in the Forbidden City takes young readers inside one of the world’s most extraordinary historical sites through the eyes of a child, with English and Chinese text running in natural parallel. It’s a gorgeous way to explore the setting. The Water Dragon, drawn from Chinese legend, is a terrific choice for kids who already have some exposure to Chinese folklore and want to go deeper into classical storytelling. And we love Zheng He: The Great Chinese Explorer, which tells the true story of the 15th-century admiral who led the world’s largest fleet. It’s a bilingual biography that connects language learning to genuine historical adventure. What a story!
French-English Books
French is one of those languages kids encounter early: in school, in songs, on menus! These two books make it feel like what it really is: a living language that belongs to an enormous range of cultures and communities around the world.

My First Bilingual Book–Animals (English–French) (French and English Edition)

Lets Cook French A Family Cookbook Cuisinons Francais Un Livre Pour Toute La Famille
My First Bilingual Book: Animals is a beautifully illustrated introduction for the youngest language learners, the kind of book that becomes a household favorite as kids point and name. Let’s Cook French, a bilingual family cookbook, takes a completely different and wonderful approach: families learn French vocabulary through the practical, shared activity of cooking together. There’s nothing quite like learning a language while you’re making something delicious! Both books work great alongside classroom learning or on their own at home.
African Languages: Swahili and Xhosa
Swahili and Xhosa are two of the most widely spoken languages on the African continent, and we wish there were more children’s books in both! These three are wonderful. They introduce young readers to African languages and to the rich cultures those languages carry.
Am I Small? / Ndimncinane? is part of a remarkable multilingual picture book series, and the English-Xhosa edition introduces one of South Africa’s eleven official languages in a gentle, questioning narrative that little ones love. Muriel Feelings’ Jambo Means Hello and Moja Means One are two of the most celebrated introductions to East African culture and the Swahili language in all of children’s literature. Illustrated by Tom Feelings with stunning double-page spreads, these books have been introducing young readers to Swahili words and East African daily life for more than fifty years, and they’re just as gorgeous today as when they were first published. We’d put them on any bookshelf.
Give the Gift of Two Languages
Bilingual books do something no flashcard or app can quite match: they make language beautiful. They show kids that words have sound and rhythm and culture behind them, and that knowing two ways to say something means knowing two ways to see the world. That’s a gift worth giving!
